Briefcase ‘that changed the world’

The BBC has the story of how Britain gave away its most valuable technological secrets to America during World War Two.

In August 1940, a team of top scientists and engineers boarded a converted ocean liner. With them they carried a black metal box which contained, amongst other things, the prototype of a cavity magnetron.

This hardware allowed the Americans to develop airborne radar by early 1941 and, later, the microwave oven.
